Thursday, February 24, 2005 Recently took up a volunteer help in translation with HF's IOFC. agreed to help her out in translating essays of her friend's from chinese to english. At first I thought that the translation work is easy, and I realized I have over-estminated my own abilities. haha. As I went along in the work, learnt quite some new things: 1) to understand and maintain the author's style 2) to communicate with author to get his expression accurately 3) to check and re-edit again and again and ask professional opinions The first day progress was slow. took whole night just to translate one paragraph. Then the second day I got much better as I can roughly understand the author's style already. However, I realized, surprises happen in all places. While I thought my speed and accuracy have increased, after a few days, I encountered mental block. Tried to translate the whole day but the outcome is just terrible. Now I realized there were times when we cannot use our brain at all. :-P Quite enjoy this work and it really helps a lot in my language ability. will continue to learn from it and work hard. ganbate! posted at 23:16
Wednesday, February 23, 2005 It surprised me to see such a snow shower in London during the past couple days. London has never really experienced much snow, moreover during this time of the year (February). I vaguely remembered the last snow i saw last year was in January. According to the weather forecast, the snow shower will continue to cover South East England, and I shall expect to see a sea of white houses, cars n roads. It was 21 Feb afternoon that I walked in the flurry of snow. Finished my lecture and as I walked out, I was delighted to discover the snow is falling rapidly. Despite the coldness of the temperature and the savageness of the strong wind that accompanied the flakes, I was immersed in feelings of bliss to have a chance to walk in the pretty snowfall. Surprisingly, many of my coursemates, instead of rejoicing the gift of nature, began cursing and complaining about the snow. Perhaps they have seen thousands of snow, but even I myself have experienced snow before, but it is just that everytime there is this gift of nature, shouldn't we appreciate the beauty? That night, my housemate actually stood outside the house just to see the snowfall. The feeling during nightime is different. With the backdrop of total blackness, the snowflakes seemed so prominent, every single one of them. It was as if each and every snow flake has a life of its own, a life with such short span that it ended immediately at the touch of the ground. Suddenly the feeling of the impermanence of life crept into my mind. Isn't our lives just like the snowflakes? I pondered... 22 Feb, surprisingly I woke up extremely early around 7, and we decided to take a stroll around our neighbourhood. Cars are layered with white powder, streets are slippery, but amidst all the snow, flowers are still blooming, signifying the strength of life, the preserverance of survival. I guessed, we might be the only 2 so-called-insane people the celebrated the snowfall early in the morning. But the rewarding satisfaction was well worth it. 23 Feb, the snowfall last night was much heavier, as the sea of white now spread to a much larger compound. And the graveyard across our house actually looked so pretty in white!(I think people will be shocked to see me marvelling at a graveyard...) I set our earlier for school, armed with my camera, just to take a few snapshots along the way. As I walked, I was awed by the pretty sight of snowflakes dancing in the air, floating in a random manner (Brownian movement as in physics or 'Random Walk' as in statistics, haha...). In the end, i was actually late for class. oooppssss... How many days more will it snow? How many days before the arrival of spring? I believe, with the snow shower that stretched for a few days, people will now appreciate spring even more. And I hope they do. posted at 11:40
